You may have been doing your nails yourself but let’s see whether you have based your steps on the right manicure guide. You may be used to that do-it-yourself manicure but you have to remember that your hands say a lot about you. Think about what impression you’re giving with your manicured nails.

Have you got the right manicure kit? How do you keep your nail polish looking clean? To be certain that your alternative to a salon nail treatment is just as beautiful, here are the steps and tricks to a cheap and easy manicure.

You need to have your nail file, nail clippers or scissors and nail buffer ready. You need to prepare a bowl of warm water, cotton wool pads, hand cream, cuticle stick, nail polish remover, soap and towel. Of course, your items wouldn’t be complete without a nail polish base and your favorite nail polish.

The first step to a manicure is to remove any old paint with a nail polish remover before you give your hands a good scrub of soap in your bowl of warm water. Then, you can clip your nails, preferably shorter. Short nails actually look better with nail polish.

File your nails in a single direction and not back and forth as this can ruin the nail. Now, buff your nail’s surface gently. This will result to a smooth surface to apply your favorite nail polish on.

With your cuticle stick, lightly push the cuticles back from your nail. Put your hands back in the warm water for one last round of clean. Then you can massage using your hand cream.

Apply the base coat which will give your nail a good foundation for the nail polish. A ridge-filling base coat is recommended and if you are aiming for a pale polish, your base coat must have a creamy or flesh tinge. This will ensure easy application of the nail polish and it will be kept looking clean.

Wait for at least two minutes for the base coat to dry completely and then you can apply your nail polish. Apply the polish just above the cuticle in three straight strokes – one straight stroke down the middle and one on each side of the nail. Ideally, do not apply lengthways.

Allow the nail polish to dry and apply a top coat in the same manner. It has to be completely dry otherwise it will smudge. Make sure that you use a good top coat, a thick top coat, so that it will be better at keeping the underneath safe.

It is recommended that you reapply your top coat every other day. This will keep your nail color protected and your manicure beautiful. With this guide, your manicure will be as fresh as it came from the salon and your nails will be healthy looking, too.
